Also published, New York: E.P. Dutton, 1906 (xviii, 1 leaf, 284p.). Whates travelled steerage across the ocean and worked his way across Canada to research the immigration boom. He describes his experiences and discusses the opportunities for immigrants. About 110 pages are devoted to the prairies. All but one of 17 photographs are of Western Canada. The inconveniences of pioneer life did not appeal to him. Portions published as letters in the London Standard in 1905.
