Edited by Charles Marvin Gates; introduction by Grace Lee Nute. Also published, 2nd edition, revised and enlarged, with foreword by Theodore C. Blegen, St Paul: Minnesota Historical Society, 1965 and 1971 (xii, 296p.). Pond's narrative had appeared in print but the diaries were published here for the first time. Macdonell's diary describes a trip from Montreal to a post on the upper Assiniboine River in 1793. MacLeod's diary is a description of the events of 1800-1801 at Fort Alexandria on the Assiniboine. Faries was stationed at Fort Lac la Pluie in 1804-1805, and Connor at Lake St Croix at the same time.
