Entered Methodist ministry in Nova Scotia, 1861; served in various parts of eastern Canada until forced by ill health to leave the ministry; took up farming at Red Deer, Alberta, 1884; prominent in founding the town of Red Deer; returned to the ministry, 1895, and played a prominent role in Methodist expansion in the West (MacRae, History of the province of Alberta).
