Born at Mount Pleasant, Upper Canada; educated at University of Toronto; ordained a Presbyterian minister, 1871, and immediately sent to Winnipeg to organize work of Presbyterian Church; founded Manitoba College, and played part in founding of University of Manitoba; elected member Royal Society of Canada, 1901; moderator of Presbyterian Church in Canada, 1902; avid historian and writer (Wallace, Dictionary of Canadian biography).
