1833-1928. Born and educated in Quebec; ordained Catholic priest, 1862; to West as missionary, 1866; associated with Catholic education and the cathedral of Saint-Boniface, 1866-1887; during Red River Rebellion contributed anonymous articles to the French press of Quebec explaining the Métis point of view; returned to Quebec 1887; surname sometimes misspelled Dugast, even on title-pages (Morice, Dictionnaire historique; Wallace, Dictionary of Canadian biography).
