1803-1874. Born in Quebec; Catholic missionary; to Red River to minister to the Indians, 1831; established mission at Baie St Paul, 1834 and at Pembina, 1849; pacified the Métis indignation over the treatment received from Thomas Simpson, the Arctic explorer, 1834 (Morice, Dictionnaire historique).
