Hunter, Jean Ross (1822-1910.)
1822-1910. Born at Norway House, daughter of HBC factor; spent girlhood at Cumberland House; became second wife of Rev. James Hunter, 1848; translated parts of the Bible, prayers, and hymns into Cree; Pilling, who corresponded with her, gives her name as Jean and her birthdate as July 26, 1822; Rev. J. Smithurst, who officiated at her wedding, referred to her as Jane (Letters of Letitia Hargrave; Pilling, Bibliography of the Algonquian languages).
