Methodist missionary, sent by Wesleyan Missionary Society of England to Rainy River, 1840; stationed at Rossville at Norway House, 1844-1854; in 1854 mission transferred to control of Canadian Wesleyan Church and Mason attached himself to the Church of England; ordained by Bishop David Anderson, June, 1854; in charge of mission at York Factory, 1854-1858 and 1862-1870; in England working on translation of the Bible, 1858-1862; retired to England, 1875; awarded D.D. by Archbishop of Canterbury, 1880 (M.E.J., Dayspring in the far west; Hodge, Handbook of American Indians; Pilling, Bibliography of the Algonquian languages; Canadian Church Historical Society offprint series no. 21, October 1960; Crockford's clerical directory).
