1868-1933. Born Cookstown, Ontario; educated at Bishop Strachan School; married Arthur Murphy, 1887; husband, a clergyman, transferred to Swan River, 1904, where she began writing as a journalist; moved to Edmonton, 1907; became active in or founded various social and women's rights organizations; appointed police magistrate to deal with cases of juvenile delinquency, 1916; one of "Famous Five" who carried the fight for admission of women to the Senate before the Privy Council and won their case, 1929; wrote under pseudonyms Emily Ferguson and Janey Canuck.
