1874-1942. Son of Rev. James Woodsworth; ordained Methodist minister, 1896; after several years became interested in social welfare work; involved in Winnipeg strike, 1919, and charged with sedition; represented North Winnipeg in House of Commons, 1921-1942; elected chairman of CCF, 1932 (Wallace, Dictionary of Canadian biography).
