Hargrave, Joseph James (1841-1894.)
1841-1894. Born at York Factory, son of James and Letitia Hargrave; entered service of HBC, 1861; stationed in Red River area, 1861-1884; during first years in the service acted as secretary to his uncle, Governor Mactavish; stationed at Edmonton, 1884-1889; paralysis forced his retirement; at that time reputed to have half a million dollars (Winnipeg Free Press, March 10, 1894).
