Cartier, George Étienne (Sir) (1814-1873.)
1814-1873. Born and educated in Quebec; fought on rebel side, became refugee in USA, 1837; returned to Canada, 1838; elected to what became provincial and federal legislatures, 1848-1873; influential in persuading Quebec to accept federation; with William McDougall sent to England to negotiate purchase of Rupert's Land, 1868; created baronet of the United Kingdom, 1868 (Wallace, Dictionary of Canadian biography).
