Mackenzie, Alexander (Sir) (1763-1820.)
1763-1820. Born on island of Lewis; immigrated to New York then Montreal; entered service of Finlay, Gregory & Co., c.1779; subsequently employed by Gregory, McLeod & Co. and NWC; in charge of Fort Chipewyan from 1788; retired to England, 1799; created knight bachelor, 1802; returned to Canada and fur trade, 1802-1808; cousin of Roderick Mackenzie (Wallace, Dictionary of Canadian biography).
