1881-1964. From France to Canada and settled in an old-country French settlement, Saint-Claude, Manitoba, 1904; married a Métis, 1910, by whom he had three children; after failing at farming, worked briefly in a store in Morris, on a survey gang, and as a real estate agent at Hudson Bay Junction; returned to France when war broke out, 1914; in First World War received 58 wounds, one of France's most decorated soldiers; became a successful writer, basing most novels on his Canadian experiences; received Prix Goncourt for Un homme se penche sur son passé, 1928; author of 46 novels, 3 plays, and 2 movie scripts (Edmonton Journal, October 19, 1964).
