1820-1914. Born and educated in Scotland; entered employ of HBC, 1838; appointed special commissioner to investigate troubles connected with Red River, 1869; in Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, 1870-1874; in House of Commons, 1870-1880, 1887-1896; part of syndicate which bought St Paul, Minneapolis, and Manitoba Railway, 1879; active on behalf of CPR; notable financier; created K.C.M.G. (1886), G.C.M.G. (1896), G.C.V.O. (1908); created Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal, 1897; elected Fellow of Royal Society, 1908 (Wallace, Dictionary of Canadian biography).
