Arrived in Red River as a Catholic missionary, 1845; coadjutor bishop of Saint-Boniface, 1851; succeeded Bishop Provencher, 1853; created archbishop, 1871; acted as a mediator during Red River Rebellion; prominent participant in the dispute over Manitoba separate schools in the early 1890s (Wallace, Dictionary of Canadian biography).
