Born in Ireland; British soldier; regiment sent to Canada at time of Fenian Raids, 1867; participated in Wolseley's Red River expedition as an advance scout, 1870; sent across the prairies to report on the smallpox epidemic, 1870-1871; made a trip to Lake Athabasca and on to Victoria via the Peace River, 1872-1873; rest of life spent elsewhere in British Empire (Wallace, Dictionary of Canadian biography).
