First published as Fire and frost , but "shortly after its publication it was discovered that another book had been copyrighted under the same title in 1898. It was, therefore, decided upon to change the title to A night on the prairie …" (note on verso of title-page). See also Peel 1022 and 1061. During a blizzard in Manitoba, March 1882, fire destroyed a log home with a sod roof, leaving the Taylor family and a guest unsuitably dressed for the weather and without shelter.
