Peel 253
- Kane, Paul (1810-1871) [info]. Wanderings of an artist among the Indians of North America: From Canada to Vancouver's Island and Oregon through the Hudson's Bay Company's territory and back again. London: Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans & Roberts, 1859.
- Physical description: xvii, [1], 455, [8] p., illus., col. plates, col. ports., fold. map.; 22 cm.
- Language: English
- Includes appendix: "Census of Indian tribes inhabiting the North-West coast of America, for the year 1846." Also published, London: Longman, 1861 (xvii, 455p.); with introduction and notes by Lawrence J. Burpee, Toronto: Radisson Society of Canada, 1925 (liv, 329p.); Edmonton: M.G. Hurtig, 1967 & 1974 (lxiv, 329p.); Rutland, Vt.: C.E. Tuttle, 1968 (lxiv, 329p.); Ann Arbor, Mich.: University Microfilms International, 1980 (xvii, 455p.); Mineola, N.Y.: Dover Publications, 1996 (xlviii, 329p.). Text of 1859 edition, except for appendix, included in Paul Kane's frontier, including wanderings of an artist among the Indians of North America , edited by J. Russell Harper, Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1971 (xviii, 350p.). For Danish version see Peel 251; for French version see Peel 252; for German version see Peel 254. In 1846 Kane crossed the continent, studying and painting Natives as he went. Much of the summer was spent on the prairies. Kane made Fort Edmonton his headquarters during the winter of 1847-1848. Recent scholarship indicates the text almost certainly was not written by Kane himself for it does not fit his very spare writing style or relate to the text in his field notes. See I.S. MacLaren, "The metamorphosis of travellers into authors: The case of Paul Kane" in Critical issues in editing exploration texts: Papers given at the twenty-eighth annual Conference on Editorial Problems, University of Toronto, 6-7 November 1992 , edited by Germaine Warkentin, Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1995, pages 67-107.
