1820-1884. Ojibway born Rama Indian settlement, Lake Simcoe; baptized, 1825; American benefactor provided name and funds for education at Cazenovia College (New York) and Upper Canada Academy (Cobourg, Ontario); accompanied James Evans to Hudson's Bay Company territories, 1840; stationed as a Methodist missionary at Rainy Lake, 1840-1843; assisted Evans and Mason at Norway House, 1843-1850; appointed to Oxford House, 1850-1854; ordained in England, 1855; at Lac La Biche, Alberta, 1855-1857; sent to Whitefish Lake, northeast of Edmonton, to found a Native Christian community; also known as Shahwahnegezhik (Ojibwa) or Sowengisik (Cree) meaning "southern skies" (Riddell, Methodism in the middle west; Robertson, A political manual of the province of Manitoba).
