Born Lanark, Upper Canada; poet; one of originators of "Canada First" movement, 1868; journalist for Montreal Gazette during first Riel Rebellion and imprisoned by rebels, 1870; officer of Governor-General's Body Guard, 1885; employed by Canadian civil service in West; elected Fellow of Royal Society of Canada, 1889 (Wallace, Dictionary of Canadian biography).
