1833-1920. Joined HBC as assistant clerk, 1852; clerk in charge at Fort Good Hope, 1854-1861; sent by James Anderson, Chief Factor in charge of Mackenzie District, to explore possibilities for trade via Beghula or Inconnu River, accompanied by Hare and Iroquois assistants, 1857; moved supplies from Fort Good Hope to build Fort Anderson, 1859; transferred to Fort Simpson, 1866; trained by Robert Kennicott, became a scientific collector for Smithsonian in the Arctic, especially of eggs; remained with HBC until 1913; corresponding member of Historical and Scientific Society of Manitoba.
