Lefroy, John Henry (Sir) (1817-1890.)
1817-1890. English military officer and scientist; conducted magnetic survey of Canada, from Lachine to Fort Simpson, 1843-1844, which established his reputation as a geographer; in charge of magnetic observatory in Toronto, 1844-1853; elected Fellow of the Royal Society, 1848, and Fellow of Royal Geographical Society, 1853; returned to England (Dictionary of National Biography).
