1870-1945. Born in Trinidad of Nova Scotian missionary parents; after a distinguished scholastic career in Europe and teaching experience in eastern Canada, to University of Saskatchewan, 1914; professor of history and librarian, 1914-1940, when he delved into the early history of the West, particularly that of the fur-trade period, gathered documents for the library, and wrote numerous articles and books; upon his retirement chancellor and senate conferred an honorary degree of doctor of laws, while the Royal Society of Canada presented him with the Tyrrell gold medal; first provincial archivist of Saskatchewan, 1941-1945.
