Preface dated 1865. Though published as a joint work, it appears to have been written by Cheadle and based upon his journal. Their description of the opportunities offered by the prairies and British Columbia helped prepare public opinion for a federation including the West. Milton's great-great-grandson, Michael Shaw Bond, was inspired to re-create the journey from Winnipeg and write an account: Way out West: On the trail of an errant ancestor , Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 2001.
